THE STUDY AND ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION PRINCIPLES IN LEARN ENGLISH THROUGH BEST QUOTATIONS

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze translation principles in the book entitled 
“learning English through best quotations”. This book comprises of 160 pages 
collected and translated by Dr. Rungphet Sriuthumporn (2020). The book covers 
quotations from successful people around the world. It is divided into 6 chapters 
including 1) work / career 2) money / wealth 3) knowledge / ability 4) health 5) family 
6) spirituality. It is a qualitative study with descriptive analysis using translation theory 
of Peter Newmark, 1988. The data was analyzed to find out the principles used and 
the results was shown in the form of table. 

According to the analysis, the study was found that there were eight 
translation principles: 1) word for word translation 2) literal translation 3) faithful 
translation 4) semantic translation 5) adaptation 6 ) free translation 7) idiomatic 
translation and 8) communicative translation. The most commonly used principle is 
adaptation while Idiomatic translation was the least commonly used.
