THE ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES FROM ENGLISH TO THAI IN “THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA”

Abstract
This research aimed to analyze translation techniques from English into Thai
in the novel “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway, translated into Thai
by Suang-absorn Kasikranan. This is a qualitative study with descriptive analysis using
translation theory of J.C. Catford. The researcher presented the data in form of the
table including both English and Thai. The data was analyzed at words, and
sentences showing each translation techniques used. According to the analysis, the
study was found that there were many translation techniques: 1) literal translation 2)
literal translation without addition of Thai words 3) literal translation with addition of
Thai words 4) partial translation without addition of Thai words 5) free translation 6)
Transcription or Transliteration. Finally, the researcher also presents the summary of
the analysis and suggestions for further research.
