THE ANALYTICAL STUDY OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES OF CRIME MOVIE TITLES FROM ENGLISH TO THAI

Abstract

The purposes of this research were to examine and analyze the movie title 
translation strategies that translators had used in the categories and types of crimes 
movies from English to Thai during the year 2019-2022 by selecting the list of crime 
movies through websites related to movies and random sampling from the list of 
movies according to popularity on IMBD website with a popularity of not less than 5 
stars. 100 titles. using SKOPOS (1977) translation theory and refer to the research of 
Teerarat Boonkongsaen (2000) for being a framework of study and analysis.  

The result showed that there were 10 translation strategies that translators 
translated the name of crime movies. including 1) all transliteration and no Thai 
language enlargement. 2) all transliteration and Thai language enlargement. 3) partial 
transliteration and Thai language enlargement. 4) partial transliteration. part 
translation and no Thai language enlargement. 5) directing translation of the entire 
text and no Thai language enlargement. 6) directing translation of the entire text and 
Thai language enlargement. 7) partial translation and Thai language enlargement. 8) 
partial translation and no Thai language enlargement. 9) renaming unrelated to the 
original name. and 10) renaming using a word with original name. Thus. it was found 
that the most popular translation strategy of translators was rename unrelated to the 
original name.  The translation by this strategy resulted in the name of movies 
renamed without attaching to the original meaning. Which was the creation of a new 
movie name and use of language that was easy to comprehend with meaning thatcan express the content of the movie and attract the attention of audiences with 
language that caught the eyes.
