A Study of the Model of Propagating Buddhism by Thai Dhammaduta Monks in the United States of America Based on the Buddhist Teaching Methods

Abstract

The study consisted of the following objectives: 1) to explore the model of 
propagating Buddhism by Thai Dhammaduta monks in the United States of America 
based on the Buddhist teaching methods; and 2) to present the guidelines for the 
model of propagating Buddhism by Thai Dhammaduta monks in the United States of 
America based on the Buddhist teaching methods. The study employed both survey 
research and qualitative research methods. The data were collected from 27 persons, 
with 18 completing an online questionnaire via Google Form and 9 conducting in
depth interviews.  

From the study, the following results are found: 

1) The study of the Thai Dhammaduta monks' model for propagating 
Buddhism in the United States of America, which is based on Buddhist teaching 
methods, reveals that Thai Dhammaduta monks communicate with the following 
goals in mind: to promote clear understanding, credibility, and faith in the 
Dhammaduta monks and Buddhism. 

2) The guidelines for the model of propagating Buddhism by Thai 
Dhammaduta monks in the United States of America based on the Buddhist teaching 
methods can be diving in the following aspects: (1) Communication for propagation, 
in which the Dhammaduta monks communicate through various forums and occasions; (2) Self-conduct for common good, in which the Dhammaduta monks work 
based on volunteerism and public mind; (3) Attitude and personality, in which the 
Dhammaduta monks respect the international Buddhist leaders, particularly those 
who are senior in vassa years. Thai Dhammaduta monks show their humility, respect, 
and openness; as a result, American people participate in Buddhist activities even if 
they are not Buddhist.
