The Puzzle of Dhamma Communication in the Lanna Yantra Candles.

Abstract

The academic paper entitled ‘The Puzzle of Dhamma Communication in the Yantra
Candle’ is of three objectives. 1) to explore the historical background. value and its influence of
Yantra Candle. 2) to investigate the types and methods of making Yantra Candle and 3) To
analyze the puzzle of Dhamma communication in the Yantra Candle.
The study showed that the Yantra Candle had developed from the superstition of
Brahmanism and Buddhism is also influenced by that tradition until it became a mixture of 

Buddhism and Brahmanism. Later. these beliefs spread to the land of Lanna. The Yantra Candle is
a ritual that has been passed down since ancient times and is considered as the occult based on
the teachings of Buddhism. It is bound to the Lanna lifestyle.
According to Yan Yantra Candle. it is divided into three kinds viz. 1) for prosperity. 2) for
inauspiciousness and 3) for spreading the Buddha teachings. The Buddhist doctrines that found in
the Yantra Candle were the Triple Gem. the Threefold Training. Ditthadhammikattha. benefits
obtainable here and now. the Four Noble Truth. Bojjhanga. enlightenment factors. Pàrami.

perfections. Pacchimaovàda or the last instruction. Appamàda. earnestness and Abhinnà or ultra-
conscious insight.

The Yantra Candle can be considered as a mystery of the wise man in the past. which
has hidden the Buddhist doctrines in the figures used in cabalistic signs. which is a strategy to
propagate the Buddha’s Teachings.
