The Development of English Learning of Graduate Students MCU

Abstract

Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University has implemented the teaching philosophy of the University, which is “Buddhist education integrated with modern science for social and mental development,” and has established a vision of becoming a university that serves as the center of Buddhist studies in the world in the future. This can be seen from the University’s establishment of the International Buddhist College to support the integration into the ASEAN Economic Community. The Language Institute of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University has therefore organized English language courses at the graduate level, including guidelines for solving problems and developing the teaching and learning of English language courses at the graduate level. This is considered an important human resource for national development in the use of English in Buddhism. However, in reality, the students’ ability to compose and write continuous texts according to communication purposes, as well as their learning achievement according to the specified criteria, remains at a low level. This inevitably indicates that English language teaching emphasizes making knowledge of language principles ready for use. Students can use this knowledge to check the accuracy of their own language use, but they are still unable to use it effectively for communication. This is consistent with the literature reviewed, which indicates that ready-to-use knowledge is like information stored in the memory unit, accumulated by learners and ready to be retrieved when used in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This results in limitations in students’ communication skills.
