10 Mangsa OF MEAT WHICH : CAN’T BE OFFERED TO MONKS AND WHICH MONKS ARE FORBIDDEN TO EAT

Abstract

This academic article has 2 objectives. namely. 1) to study the offerings which are 
appropriate for relatives to give to monks; 2) to study the analysis of the 10 types of meat that 
monks are forbidden to eat or receive. as detailed in the Pali Canon. This is a documentary study. 
researching the Buddhist scriptures. academic texts. as well as views and theories. It was seen 
that the Buddha taught that good and correct behaviour according to the principles of Buddhism. 
appropriate to the time and place. consists of Kalik 4. that is Yavakalik. Yamakalik. Sattakalik and 
Yavajivik. and 10 types of meat which monks are forbidden to receive or eat in the Pali Canon. 
that is. meat of 1) humans. 2) elephants. 3) horses. 4) hyenas. 5) tigers. 6) leopards. 7) bears.  8) 
lions. 9)dogs. and 10) snakes. Importantly. there are views and theories regarding things which are 
forbidden for monks. such as that a monk should not eat the meat of an animal which has been 
killed purposely to offer to him. and he should not be asked what types of food he likes. or 
whether he likes the food offered or not. as this is especially inappropriate.
