A Study of Buddhadhamma appearing in Mural Painting of Wat Rajaburana

Abstract

This article is studied from the research aiming study :- (1) for study of mural
painting in holistic Buddhism, (2) for study of mural painting in Wat Rājāpūraṇa and
(3) for analytics of the Buddha’s teaching appearing in mural painting in Wat
Rājāpūraṇa. It is the document research. Its area is Wat Rājāpūraṇa, Muang,
Phitsanulok. Its analytics is descriptive. Its result leads to learning for right view to
Buddhism through this mural painting. The result of this research is found that:-
Main factors of Wat in Buddhism of Thailand are royal vihāra, Buddha Hall and
Dhamma sālā. It is Thai style of architectural halls. These halls are large area being
suitable for mural painting inside in the kinds of Buddha’s story, Vessantarajātaka or
Mālālaya in the communication of Dhamma with arts and science instead of the
Buddha’s teachings. Their cores are Buddhist history in the part of mural painting. We
can say that ‘Wat in Buddhism is the source of arts and cultures of Thailand’.
The Wat Rājāpūraṇa was built in Sukhothai age with royal stupa. In which,
Buddha hall is double Semā. The Buddha Hall is mural painting walking on sea,
boat, attraction with monkey in the form of novel-Rāmāyaṇa. Besides, there is
social painting is the twin of In-Jan. the royal Hall, there are the mural paintings of
battle Māra of the Buddha with army of elephant, horse, poison animals coming for
hunting the Buddha. The Buddha wins those māras by power of buñña and the god
of land pours water into those māras and they all die. The mural painting of
attraction for monkeys in Buddha’s hall communicates to origin and life of the world,
government in 3 supremacies. So, the mural paintings of Wat communicates the great
Dhamma. This is arranged as the body of knowledge : -Painting Heritage of Buddhism
