A Study of the Traditions, Rituals, and Beliefs of Funeral Cremation in the Consumerism trend of Wat Nong Phai, Pho Klang Sub-District, Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province

Abstract

This research study is aimed 1) to study the moral, tradition, rituals of the funeral
ceremony in Buddhism, 2) to study the morals and traditions of the funeral ceremony of Nakhon
Ratchasima, 3) to study the motto, traditions, rituals, and the process of becoming a product of
cremation in the consumerist trend. This research is a qualitative research which has the following
research steps: 1) studying, researching, and collecting data from primary documents such as the
Tripitaka of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya (Thai version) B.E. 2539, the secondary documents
such as commentary, Dika Anudika, Wisutthimakon, and related research papers, 2) Interviewing
the abbot of Wat Nong Phai, 5 Wat Nong Phai monks, 1 churchwarden, 1 crematorium decorator,
1 casket shop, 1 flower shop, 1 undertaker, and 2 cooks 3) Submitting a letter requesting
permission to enter the area with the Abbot of Wat Nong Phai, the leader of Tambon Pho Klang,
people in the area, and submitting a questionnaire for the community of Pho Klang Subdistrict, 4)
The interviewing tools included small group discussions, questionnaires, and participatory
observations, 5) compiling data, auditing, and analyzing data according to objectives.
The results of the study found that most funeral expenses are due to values that have become

injections of the funeral, the embalming, the invitation to the spirit, the burial, the funeral, the
facility, the food and drink, the video photography, the cost of flower arrangements for the
funeral face, the prayers for charity, the average funeral arrangement is 319 baht.
